In 2019, I visited the dermatologist for a small cut on the side of my left nostril. It was one of those stubborn little wounds that would heal, then reopen again. I brushed it off, assuming it was just from wearing makeup and washing my face—never once thinking it could be anything more.
At the appointment, the dermatologist decided to take a biopsy and send it to the lab. I didn’t think much of it at the time; I assumed it was just routine. But a few days later, I received a phone call that changed everything. It was basal cell carcinoma—a form of skin cancer. I would need Mohs surgery to remove it.
I was completely shocked.
I scheduled my Mohs surgery for the following week—I knew I couldn’t wait. I just had to take the next step. The procedure ended up lasting four hours. The doctor carefully removed sections of my nostril and the surrounding skin, checking each layer under a microscope to ensure all the cancer cells were gone. To reconstruct the damaged area, he performed a skin graft using tissue from behind my left ear.
That night, it all sank in. I went home and cried. The reality of how serious it was finally hit me. For weeks afterward, I looked rough waiting for my stitches to come out. The scar ran deep, but thanks to the doctor’s incredible skill, I’ll always be grateful for the care I received.
